Going to Macedonia for the holidays

Finally it is time to travel somewhere again. This time the destination is Macedonia and considering my travel companions, the trip is definitely going to be an interesting adventure.

We are taking a train from Ljubljana (Slovenia) via Belgrade (Serbia) to Skopje (Macedonia) which is going to take no less then 19 hours. We are planning to spend a few days in the capital of The former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (or FYROM) as it used to be referred to due to a naming dispute with Greece.

EDIT: I have been reminded by one of my readers that now the official name of the country is Republic of Macedonia.

The main plan is to check out the city of Skopje, try some local food and drinks, and generally have a great time. We will have four days to explore the city and maybe also take a day trip somewhere else - I think Ohrid is one of the more obvious choices. Let us just wait and see.

Unfortunately you will probably have to wait for the report until I return. I guess it is going to be a whole new year by then.

Hope you have a great trip - sounds like a fun train journey, I'll look forwards to hearing about it, I haven't been to that part of the world.

@Rachel Cotterill:
I hope to take you there with my report. ;)

As I suspect, you might not like food in those parts all that much. Meat is the star of almost every meal. It is also similar with other countries in the neighbourhood.
A quote from a really funny movie My big fat Greek wedding captures the mentality of the area perfectly:
"What do you mean he don't eat no meat?
Oh, that's okay. I make lamb!"

"the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (or FYROM) as it is officially referred to."

It is not. Even Wikipedia has it flaws... It is Macedonia or Republic of Macedonia. BTW, have a nice stay, and even the meat is the star of every meal, the vegetables and fruits are unforgettable, too :)

@kirev:
The whole naming dispute seems totally unnecessary to me. But then again, who am I to judge...

In Slovenia we also have some silly border issues with Croatia (also an unnecessary thing if you ask me), but it seems to me that the relationship between Greece and Macedonia has really been kept on a totally different level.

I plan to steer away from all that politics while in Macedonia. Instead of that I hope to try the best of every kind of food I can get. Vegetables and fruit of all kinds are no exception. :)

Do you maybe know some nice places in Skopje that I should not miss?

I agree, so they shouldn't ever think about changing names of other people's country, language, ethnicity, stadiums, highways, airports.

So, Greek problem with our name is turning into a basic human right problem, first in history. Your problem is an ordinary territorial dispute :) And I am vacationing in Greece for 5 years in a row.

Regarding the places to visit - check the facebook groups about Skopje, Ohrid, Macedonia... If there's any problem, feel free to attach @t-home.mk to my name to contact me so we can even get together for your quick orientation :)
